In this 27-part series, we take a journey into the life of Israel, applying truths from the books of Ezra and Nehemiah as they relate to us in the 21st Century Church. During Israel’s captivity in Babylon, their land was completely devastated - the Temple was ruined, the walls of protection were gone, and the lives of the people were in total chaos. Similarly, the Church that was born in the book of the Acts of the Apostles was devastated and had to go “underground” during the Dark Ages. In 1501, the Lord raised up a man by the name of Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic priest who came into a divine revelation and challenged the entire religious system of his day, thus beginning The Reformation.
The time period from Martin Luther until now is similar to the period in Israel’s history when the Temple was rebuilt under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Joshua, and the city walls under Nehemiah. After the Temple was built, and the walls and gates constructed, the Lord brought Ezra to build the internal structures in the lives of the people. This process of internal change is what I call “Internal Reformation”.
The restoration of Israel gives us some powerful spiritual principles to live by. While we are not called to build a literal, physical temple (as the Church is not a physical building; but a spiritual one made up of lively stones – born-again Believers), yet we are to build God’s spiritual house with the same level of accuracy and precision as the great reformers did. This process of “Internal Reformation” is bringing about lasting change in the lives of Believers and restoring alignment and spiritual capacity to the Church. |
