Sarah
A Woman Of Tremendous Worth
If Abraham is known as the 'father of faith' then it is only fitting to
consider Sarah to be the 'mother of faith'. However a study of the life of Sarah
would prove to be rather interesting.
Her life before the call of God to her husband reveals that she was an
idol worshipper. This is evidenced by the fact (Joshua: 24: 2) that the bible
records this. Also Abraham's father name was 'Terah' which is the Hebrew for
'moon-god' (Gen: 11: 27 - 32).
Even more interesting is the fact that her name was first ‘Sarai’,
which in the Hebrew means the following:
To dominate; head person; captain; governor; lord; or one
who exercises rule or dominion.
In the bible a person's name is indicative of the person's character, so
here we see that Sarai was a "bossy" wife as a matter of fact she
launched into her call from God in that same state and tried to bring to pass
His Will. Her condition was further encouraged when he compromised his position
of authority and asked her to lie (Gen: 12: 10 - 13).
She even tried to control the will of God in demanding that Abram
establish the promised seed through her maid Hagar. We know the end result of
that and the attendant frustration that resulted.
However this woman represented so many of today's women who try to move
the hand of God through improper means. (Although I firmly believe that there
are times when wives need to rise up and take a stand otherwise the ship would
sink; for example Zipporah, Moses wife in Exodus: 4: 1 - 26,
especially verses 25 & 26).
But then we see this woman coming to such a place of incredible
submission and brokenness before the Lord that her name was changed from Sarai
to Sarah (Gen: 17: 15 - 16); which now meant: - Mistress; a female noble: -
lady; princess; queen.
What a mighty change, what a mighty woman; this change was so significant
that Peter had to bring clarity to the hearts of the believers in I Peter: 3:6
& Gen: 18:12.
She changed from being "lord" to where she can now call
her husband lord, what a tremendous transformation.
Sarah the one who will now bring the 'will of God' into the earth had
completely changed and was now ready for Isaac to be born.
So many of us miss this valuable lesson to be learnt from the life of
Sarah and keep aborting the purpose of the Lord for our lives, BUT this woman
came to her senses and turned around and because of that the Church is where it
is today. Please remember that change is a requirement for successful kingdom
living!
